This year I've got a pretty sweet project to work on. At Owen Jones & Partners we are given every 3rd Friday of the month off to do something that inspires us. Actually, it's not really a day off, but a day to do something other than the projects we are normally work on throughout the week. These "inspiring" activities could be building an awesome website, taking a Lynda.com tutorial on After Effects, or doing what I will be doing for Inspiration Friday this year: making an interactive digital picture book for iPad. It's the perfect opportunity to build our skills and just a great break from the normal nose to the grindstone work week that gets us rejuvenated and ready for the next week.
The Red Balloon
So, anyways, about my project. I really wanted to create a picture book that would be all visuals, no words/text, because I thought it would be an awesome challenge to be able to communicate well without the use of words & I thought it would also be great to create something universal, that broke the barriers of language. I spent the day mostly researching and reading children's books and picture books at Barnes & Noble, looking up silent films, animated shorts, etc. & that's when I saw The Red Balloon by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse. It's a story about a boy who discovers a floating red balloon with an interesting personality that he practically walks around the streets of Paris like a pet dog. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it, it's only 30 minutes. The film has such a rare use of dialogue that I thought it would be a blast to illustrate this story, or an adaptation of it, and make it an interactive experience.
There will be many steps along the way to get this finished before the end of the year so here are a list of things I'm planning on working on along with some preliminary character sketches I made while watching the movie & afterwards. If you've got more ideas or have done this sort of thing before you're more than welcome to leave me a comment below.
