Giving back to the community is always something to be proud of. AIGA Portland & The Right Brain Initiative collaborated on this non-profit project to inspire young people to get their creative juices flowing. It's a creativity primer consisting of 50 cards with fun & silly activities for children up to age 100 who want to explore the limits of what their brains can think up. Each of the cards were illustrated by local artists including Allison Berg, Halle Cisco, Melissa Egan, Jamie Letourneau, Forrest Martin, Sara Sjol, Jenny Tiffany, Tom O’Toole, Brooke Weeber, and yours truly Josh Balleza. I created these 4 cards (you can click on them to get a closer look):
This all-volunteer project has a Grand Challenge:
"We are asking for ten local Portland creative firms and agencies to step up to the Brain Food plate and put this innovative creative project in all forty-four Portland metro area public schools that Right Brain serves. With ten donations of $1000 each, we can put Brain Food in the hands of every teacher within these schools. To allow them to continue bringing creativity into the learning process, and artistic expression into our schools.
In return, you will receive ten Brain Food decks. To show our appreciation, we will thank you on the printed deck. You’ll also receive thank you’s online through AIGA and Right Brain. We challenge you! To jump start future generations of designers. To give back to our youth. And to stand up for the arts.
If your team can show your support for our collective project, contact Melissa Delzio, Design for Good Chair at AIGA Portland, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Because igniting a creative spark in Portland kids is a grand thing!"
Last night my wife and I were super excited to cheer on our friend Ryan Hayes who performed with Jon Peter Lewis on The Voice. They ended up turning all 4 chairs and picking Adam Levine to be their coach for the show. Before their performance, there was a snippet where they showed pictures on a tablet of Deep Love: A Ghostly Folk Opera, which Ryan actually wrote with another friend of ours Garrett Sherwood and performs in with Garrett and Jon.
Anyways, I'm super excited that they made it on the show and I get to watch them on TV, but I'm also excited that my work was on TV for a whole 1 or 2 seconds! Click here to see more of the branding & design I did for Deep Love. Also, be sure to watch their rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues" here, or listen to the full version on iTunes.
There were some really outstanding portfolios & it was tough to choose my favorites though here are the five winners. Click on the links or thumbnails below to see more of their work:

Happy Pi Day! Every March 14 we try to celebrate the mathematical number π, or 3.14159265359... used in geometry, trigonometry, physics, etc. Read some more about pi on wikipedia, there's some cool stuff there.
Tonight I'll possibly be making/eating a rhubarb pie and watching "Life of Pi". Thank you mathematics, thank you pastries, sugar & fat, and thank you Yann Martel & Ang Lee.
